Phasing

The feature has been tentatively phased to the late Roman period, based on the finds of 5 Roman sherds. However, the ditch appears to have the same alignment as 012AD00530 and 012AD07227 to the west, albeit for a shorter length. This may indicate a slightly later (Anglian) date for this feature.

Discussion

This enclosure appears to occur early in the sequence, cut by pit 012AD00727 and possibly by ditch 012AD00489 (this was never clear during excavation). However, its alignment may indicate that it was the first in the sequence of enclosure ditches continued by 012AD00530 and 012AD07227. The single fill of the ditch was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 10% chalk inclusion. Both daub and charcoal flecking was noted, with samples of each taken.

The ditch was cut into hillwash with a U-shaped profile. It appeared to have been cut down to the pebble surface 012AD00384.
